エルサルバドルは、中米に位置する小国で、太平洋に面し、美しいビーチと火山が特徴の国です。国土は小さいものの、人口密度は、中南米で最も高い国の一つです。経済はコーヒー、砂糖、繊維産業が中心で、アメリカとの経済関係が深い一方、近年はビットコインを法定通貨にするなど独自の政策も注目されています。
日本との関係は良好で、特に経済、技術協力が活発です。JICA、（国際協力機構）が防災、インフラ整備、農業技術の支援を行い、日本からの自動車や機械製品の輸出も多いです。
しかし、長年ギャング、（マラス）の活動が治安を悪化させており、殺人率が、世界的に高かった時期もあります。近年はナジブブケレ大統領の強硬な治安対策で、犯罪が減少しましたが、一部地域では、依然として危険な場所もあります。
