アフガニスタンは中央アジアの「大地の十字路」として多文化が共存する国で、日本とは戦後の復興支援を通じて関係を深めてきました。その中で、医師の中村哲氏は象徴的な存在です。彼は医療活動を行う中で、干ばつが健康問題の根本原因であることに気づき、「100の診療所より1本の用水路が必要」と考え、独学で土木技術を学び用水路建設を進めました。その結果、約65万人の生活が改善され、荒地に緑が戻りました。彼は2019年に現地で命を落としましたが、その遺志は現在も受け継がれています。このような活動が、日本とアフガニスタンの絆をさらに深める役割を果たしています。
