タコと砂漠の国、モーリタニアは西アフリカ北部に位置する国で、大西洋に面し、広大なサハラ砂漠が国土の多くを占めています。その漁業資源、とりわけタコは国の重要な輸出品で、日本はモーリタニア産タコの主要な輸入先です。近年、日本ではタコの需要が増加しており、モーリタニアからの輸入も注目されています。経済の中心は漁業のほか、鉄鉱石の輸出や牧畜が挙げられます。一方で、食糧不足や砂漠化など課題も多く、国際的な支援を受けています。歴史的にはフランスの植民地支配を受け、1960年に独立。文化的にはアラブとアフリカの伝統が融合した独自の特色があります。近年では日本の国際協力機構を通じた農業や漁業支援が展開されています。
