オクラの原産地は、アフリカで、明治初期に中近東・中国を経て日本に伝わりました。
国内の主な産地は、鹿児島県、高知県、沖縄県など南寄りの地域です。鹿児島県は全国シェア41.6％で、国内生産量の約69％を占めています。高知県は出荷量上位5県の中で10アール当たりの収量が最も多く、2.16トンです。
