自宅の近所でも、ふだん通らない道を歩くと「へえ、こんな場所があったんだ」と驚くことがあります。大阪市西淀川区もそのひとつ。阪神工業地帯の真ん中にあり、幹線道路沿いは車やトラックで常ににぎやかですが、もとは河口に浮かぶ砂州「八十島」がつながってできた土地。今も「島」のつく地名が多く残り、古くから畿内の玄関口としてさまざまな文化を受け入れてきた場所です。
